The Office of Fair Trading have launched an online register which allows both businesses and consumers to search and check through the Consumer Credit Licence Register and view the details of over 125,000 businesses who offer goods and services on credit, lend money, or offer debt advice and solutions.
Why have a public register?
Under the Consumer Credit Act 1974 and the Estate Agents Act 1979 this information has to be publicly available but it also gives consumers and businesses direct access to important information about the credit businesses they deal with as anyone can easily go online and check to make sure that the business they’re dealing with is properly licenced to offer credit and that they are a reputable company.
Not only does the register tell you who has a licence, but it also gives details of applications, past and present, as well as details of refusal or if a licence has been revoked, which can be useful as some businesses may have previously held a licence, had it revoked, but still claim to be officially licensed.
Search the register
You can search the Consumer Credit Licence Register by a variety of different criteria so you can be as vague or as specific as you need. These include:
- Licence Number
- Organisation Name
- Trading Name
- Company Registration Number
- Business Category e.g. Consumer Credit, Debt Collecting, etc.
- Business Type e.g. Transport, Pensions, Insurance, etc.
This search will bring up the business details including names, addresses, licence status, etc. Click here to go to the search page.
Consumer Credit Bulletin
The bulletin is a weekly update available online which details licensing decisions and allows readers to search for changes to the register and they can search by various criteria:
- Licence type – issued, renewed, refused etc.
- Region – This is the local authority e.g Kent County Council
- Date – Search in date ranges of 1 week going back as far as 1996, although licence details are held dating prior to that.
